12 Heat Recovery Systems

NECB-2011 Article 8.4.4.20

When a heat recovery system is used in the proposed design as per section 5.2.10 (based on sensible heat in the exhaust with a minimum efficiency of 50%), then the reference building for the corresponding thermal blocks shall also use a heat recovery system that complies with section 5.2.10 (2) and (3) i.e. the recovered heat shall be used in the building systems and specialised exhaust systems need not comply.

Section 8.4.4.20 also states that heat recovered from an HVAC system's exhaust air shall be used to preheat the outside air supplied by that system.

NECB reference systems 2, 3, 5, 6 & 7 in ApacheHVAC include the option for airside energy recovery but it is disabled by default. To engage the pre-defined energy recovery, check the “Energy recovery preconditioning of outside air” box on the System Parameters tab of the System Parameters dialog.
